One place in Dunedin that is specialising in propagating eco-sourced natives is the Shetland St Community Gardens.
Eco-sourcing concerns the propagation and use of plants from locally sourced native seeds to facilitate the restoration of bush, wetlands and other native habitats.
In January 2013, I spoke to Hendrik Koch, Coordinator of the Shetland St Community Gardens, a lovely permaculture style community gardens plus native propagation nursery, which is situated between Roslyn and Kaikorai Valley. Hendrik chats about the value of eco-sourced natives to support the biodiversity of plant species, propagate species that are suited to the local conditions and valuable to preserve – both for their intrinsic value and the resilience they add to ecosystems. Hendrik discusses low cost propagation techniques that let nature do most of the work.
The Shetland St Community Gardens is one of Dunedin’s best kept secrets. It is staffed Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am-3pm and open to the public to enjoy at any time. Volunteers to help work in the garden are welcome to enquire with Hendrik on 4739967 or come along during one of the open days.
