Growing Great Garlic – with Dennis Enright

The thing about garlic is that you don’t really know if you’re going to have a great crop until you start pulling them up! That’s part of the fun I guess. Ideally we want big bulbs with great flavor and no sign of disease. This show looks at some of the factors that will help you grow great garlic, from planting to harvesting. In particular we discuss feeding, watering and disease prevention.

For this programme, I visited with Dennis Enright on his certified organic property on the edge of the fertile Taieri Plains, a one acre property situated almost in the heart of Mosgiel, Dunedin. Its called Taieri Organic Produce (or TOP veges for short), and a major focus of Dennis’ property is to produce garlic for the Otago Farmers Market. Dennis also grows a variety of other greens for the market.

Dennis has a long interest in growing vegetables organically both for himself and commercially. His property is registered organic with OFNZ. He is also currently Chair of Soil and Health, the organic advocacy group that promotes organics in New Zealand and produces the magazine Organic NZ.
